Computer Digital Literacy Project
Digital literacy Cyber Coach that facilitates basic ICT literacy training to the
rural and urban marginalized school communities in Kenya.
Summary: Digital literacy Cyber Coach is a development project on computer-mediated
education for teachers and students in schools of Kenya. It will be basically
a self-contained coach, consisting of 20 sets of speedy computers, basic ICT
literacy training modules, a set of project evaluation pack, 20 local area networked
computers, a content-rich server, modems, routers, LCD projectors, a pull down screen,
colour television, CD player, cassette players, PA systems, digital camera, polaroid
camera, other audio visual aids, colour and lazer printer, fax machines, scanner, courseware,
software, reference books a refrigerator and a wash room.
The Cyber Coach is driven by a "smart" driver-cum-facilitator and a co-driver-cum-team
leader. It goes round the non-mainstream schools to conduct basic ICT Literacy Programs.
Non-main stream schools are schools that are deprived of access to information
and opportunity to acquire ICT skills.
These schools are not included in the current government e-School Program or any
other similar ICT initiatives conducted by non-government organizations.
For a start 20 non-mainstream schools will selected by the CadifKenya in Nyanza province
to participate in the Digital literacy Cyber Coach pilot project for a year.
Digital Literacy Cyber Coach, will be the product of collaborative efforts by
several strategic partners. It is meant to address the issue of ICT access
in Kenya and is aimed at bridging the gap between the information rich and
information poor communities in in the province.
The Digital Literacy Cyber Coach can be replicated, adopted and adapted
in other parts of the world with similar settings. In this smart-partnership model,
we call for your support to provided the rest of the Digital Literacy
Cyber Coach in terms of funding, resources and its technology components.
In addition Digital Literacy Cyber Coach also designed and developed the
interior and exterior of the Cyber Coach, its research agenda, educational
contents, evaluation packs and oversees the implementation of the project.
Regular project school visit to facilitate basic ICT litracy training programs
for Form One students (age 13) and their teachers.
Participate in Community Services to promote life long learning
through ICT Participate in ICT awareness campaign and special events, in collaboration
with government & non-government organizations. For each working day, Digital literacy
Cyber Coach will coach 140 clients in basic ICT literacy.
The main objectives of the project are :
- To facilitate basic ICT literacy training programs for school
communities (students, teachers and parents) in rural and urban non-main stream schools in Kenya
- To provide electronic classroom experiences to these school communities.
- To collect data and statistics for future national ICT planning purposes
And its specific objectives are:
- To train 140 clients in basic ICT literacy per working day.
- To provide intensive ICT literacy training to 2800 teachers and students in selected
non-main stream schools in Nyanza
The Digital Literacy Cyber Coach is a self-contained mobile multimedia cyber
learning station complete with curriculum, evaluation pack,
books, courseware, software, ICT peripherals, audio-visual aids, a cozy environment,
a smart driver cum assistant and a co-driver or the chief facilitator.
It will be the first of its kind in Kenya after Malaysia. It brings ICT to the
doorsteps of the information-poor and the undeserved in Kenya to help them "jump-start"
to the e-world. In addition, it also provides library services to the info-poor
school communities. The curriculum, modules and activities are custom made
to suit the users and could be adopted, adapted or replicated in other parts
of the world with similar settings. The project is based on the model
partnership and is a collaborative effort. The ICT literacy training
programs are free to the users. There is no fee charged. Though Digital
literacy Cyber Coach focuses on providing literacy training to the non-main
stream school communities in Nyanza.
